Chennai’s mornings and markets
Chennai wakes early. Marina Beach and Besant Nagar’s seafront fill with walkers, vendors and families before the sun climbs. Inside the city, Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Santhome Cathedral and the Theosophical Society grounds show different strands of local history. Idli, dosa and strong coffee at small eateries are as important as any official sight.
Mahabalipuram’s rock cut storybook
Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram, is compact enough to explore on foot. The Shore Temple, the monolithic chariots known as the Pancha Rathas and the bas relief of Arjuna’s Penance or the Descent of the Ganga are highlights. Coastal erosion and conservation work mean some areas may be fenced, but there is still plenty of access to carvings that have watched centuries of tides.
Heat, modesty and sea sense
Temperatures stay high for much of the year, and humidity is a fact of life. Light, modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees respects local norms in religious spaces and protects against the sun. Sea conditions can be rough on sections of this coast, so swimming is not always advisable. Lifeguard advice and local knowledge matter more than any checklist of beaches. With those basics in place, this stretch of Tamil Nadu offers a dense mix of music, stone and salt air.
